I find beauty in nature, I find it on the ground, in the form of heaps of dry, hard leaves, underneath eucalyptus trees. Their form, colour, texture and smell were foreign to me, years ago, as a newcomer to this ancient land Australia.
Looking back at my work, I find that the motif of the leaf appears again and again. I collect it from different locations around Australia.
The leaf is used as a template, sometimes not a whole leaf, but broken bits, that you find after a storm.
It is applied in repetition, a modular form, and the emerging image is to be read like a pictorial script, depicting beauty.
I order them according to my sense of aesthetics, layering the pure unmixed colour, to enhance and draw attention to their surface, and change their naturalistic appearance. In the paintings that I construct, I would like them to glow and come to life again, in a different form and context.

For this exhibition I have focussed my attention on venerable old trees and their enduring power.  I looked back through art history to find a form to represent worship and veneration and chose gilded triptych altar pieces from 14th century Italy.  I created my gilded altar pieces from recycled Australian red cedar and painted trees and birds as forest icons.

I work in oils and on both large and medium sized stretched canvases. Using this base my paintings take two forms.

The first is free form imagination of reefs and underwater scenes inspired by the colours of our south coast, particularly the sapphires and turquoises that we see around us. In these paintings I often use a variety of media to capture my thoughts. The second form I use captures the land, mountains, rivers and beaches of our area. This work evolves from photos I have taken where light plays with form to create our landscape

I love how a photographic portrait can reveal a person. The photograph stimulates our imagination as to who the subject is, and what they are like.  It is these hints of the essence of a person that I aim to capture in my portraits.
I am fascinated by analogue photography, and choose to employ it in most of my work. Far from the digital realm, the darkroom process manifests my photographs as tangible objects, to be owned and cherished.  Enhancing this, no two images printed in the darkroom are exactly the same, making each entirely unique.
Because the images in this body of work were individually crafted using traditional analogue printing methods, I was able to constantly make choices based on further revealing the intrinsic nature of the people in my portraits.

Justine Wardle

The ancient craft of willow furniture making has been practised worldwide for centuries.  Often produced and sold by Gypsies travelling through Europe and America using recycled nails from burnt buildings.  The idea of willow furniture has recently travelled to the Bega Valley.  Your willow chair has been crafted using carefully selected wild willow from Dry River at Quaama uniquely designed by Justine Wardle, artesian from Quaama.   The frame has been constructed from locally sourced hardwood saplings, Stringy Bark.  The screws and nails are galvanised to prevent rust.  This work is eco friendly in construction with limited harm to the trees it came from and without the usual glues and synthetics used in modern ‘wicker’ furniture.

" I have always been driven to use a variety of materials to express my concepts and design ideas in both sculptural and painterly forms. Willow has proved to be a convenient foil for me forging the divide between sculpture, design, and function. Whist working with Willow I have come to realize how a resource can be scorned in a foreign environment but still transport its cultural heritage. I am also interested in figurative and landscape painting and have included a couple of recent works in this exhibition."

Steven Stafford
Steve Stafford

Steve Stafford designer/maker from Cobargo is coming to the coast

& exhibiting his wooden creations in Shop7ArtSpace during January 2014.

Steve & Helen ran Working Wood in Cobargo for 20 years closing in 2009.

Steve continues to work, exhibiting and selling his work locally and further afield.

Steve's passion for food and cooking has progressed to the point where he has sourced a range of Japanese knife blades to which he hand shapes handles in unique Australian timbers, creating an art piece both functional and beautiful. The Australian timbers used are highly figured and some are very rare. All timbers are sourced from responsible suppliers.

_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________        FRANCIS KEOGH
Francis Keogh    Francis Keogh-    Francis Keogh-   Francis Keogh-

Francis has a background in pastel and acrylic media.  Seven years ago, in the midst of a creative hiatus, he bought his first digital camera and produced landscapes of the South Coast, which he sold at local markets.  Moving to Sydney in 2006, he continued to hone his skills as a photographer, and to learn the default image editing program of all professionals, Photoshop.  Last year Francis discovered a technique called light painting and undertook some training with Peter Solness.  Light painting entails the use of torches to selectively illuminate the subject, in a rather similar way to an artist using a brush.  It is therefore interpretive, although no digital manipulation is employed, the idea being rather to produce a kind of enhanced naturalism.  For Francis this opens up a creative dimension which straddles the disciplines of photography and art, allowing him to bring together his experience of both mediums.  Francis has had two previous exhibitions at the SoART gallery in Narooma.
